ALBUM REVIEW

Artist: Keri Hilson
Album: In A Perfect World
Exec. Producer: Timbaland
Label: Interscope
Release Date: March 24, 2009

Debut albums are an artist's introduction to the music world. Usually the introduction is strong because they are stating ''This is what I have to offer, please come back for more.'' In this case, Keri Hilson's long awaited debut album is less than perfect and does not outline her talents as it should.

Hilson may not have a crazy range vocally but she has a lot of potential. Her sound is similar to that of Ciara and Rhianna and she has the strongest voice out of the three. Although she displays her vocal talents throughout the album you are left wondering if she has more to offer based on tracks like the first single "Energy."

With out a doubt production is tight considering Timbaland and Polow da Don produced the majority of the album. They stick with using the current trend of futuristic sounds-auto tunes or an electronic pop style. "Turnin' Me On" and "Get Your Money Up" are decent but definitely not her strong suit. Don't get me wrong "Get Your Money Up" featuring Keyshia Cole and Trina is a hype female anthem and she holds her own with the veterans (if you will).

Timbaland makes his vocal appearance on the track "Return the Favor" which isn't any different than his appearance on albums he has produced for artists like Justin Timberlake and Nelly. On the other hand "Knock You Down" featuring Ne-Yo and Kanye West and "Alienated" are among the few highlights. "Alienated" is a nice break to the rest of the album and probably insight to where Hilson should go with her next project.

Hilson rounds out the album with slow jams like, "Slow Dance" a Prince like track and "How Does It Feel" which for a second sounds like something right off a Ciara album. This part of the album is a little bland and does not display her skills. "Change Me" featuring Akon has a nice flow and would have been better if Akon's vocals were kept in the background.

Overall the album has highs and lows, unfortunately more lows for this young lady, as her talents were underplayed. This album may have been a way to feel out where she would like to go in the future. For her next project sticking with tracks that allow her to shine vocally would do her just fine.
